Geographic Map

The geographic map shows a topographic view of Juneau airport and the surrounding area.  It depicts the runway, the bridge, JAWS alert areas, and the location and current wind data from the anemometers and wind profilers.
Sensor Locations:

True North and Magnetic North:
The map is oriented with respect to true north.
True north is indicated by N and
magnetic north is denoted by M.
Current Winds:
Anemometer locations are denoted by an dark green wind barb that shows the one minute average wind speed and direction at that location.
Wind profiler locations are denoted by a blue wind barb that shows the 10-minute average wind speed and direction at the altitude identified in the legend.
Under CALM conditions (winds less than 3 knots), a circle rather than a barb is shown.
A red 'X' indicates that data is not available (NA).

JAWS Alert Areas:

The alert areas are depicted by filled in polygons whose color corresponds to the area's alert status.

In the table below, the alert area colors are shown over a section of the terrain map to compare with what is seen on the display.

Alert Area ColorTurbulence Alert Description
none The area is transparent when there is no alert for the area.

MOD B737 The area is colored yellow for the alert of "MOD B737", moderate turbulence for a B737-type aircraft.
SEV B737 The area is colored red for the alert of "SEV B737", severe turbulence for a B737-type aircraft.
NA The area is colored gray when there is insufficient data to determine the alert level and the alert status is not available (NA).
